Dutch hip-hop ensemble De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig (Today’s Youth) burst onto the public stage seemingly out of nowhere with their 2005 hit single “Watskeburt?” The track was noticed and subsequently given airtime by several national radio DJs. The catchy beat with heavy electronic influences propelled the single to the #1 spot in the charts, but there was something else that made this track special: the lyrics were unmistakably Dutch, yet so infused with slang that some phrases were hard to decipher. The slang seemed to be specific not just to young people but to the members of the band itself and maybe a small group around them. Everyone else was left in the dark as to what the song meant.

Just take the title, “Watskeburt?” This is not an actual word but likely a contraction of the phrase “Wat is er gebeurt?” (What has happened?). Spoken out in full like that, it is a rather formal question and not something you would hear in the youth vernacular at all. This neologism made it into popular speech and soon it could be heard all over the country, from schoolyards to office buildings. Countless interviewers have asked the group about the meaning behind the title and numerous other words in their song. The rappers’ vague answers have kept everyone guessing. For instance, in their song, they refer to certain people as “sjembek,” a completely made-up term. When asked what it means, one of the rappers said: “It’s someone who talks too much nonsense and forms a kind of crusty mouth.”

What the rappers of De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig have successfully done is to create Dutch counterparts of American rap colloquialisms. Sometimes by (too) literally translating established rap terms from English into Dutch and, at other times, by making up their own original slang. Each band member also has a distinct linguistic influence that he brings into the group’s vocabulary. Willie Wartaal has roots in the Netherlands Antilles and uses slang from that community, while Vieze Fur relies heavily on slang from and references to hip-hop and pop icons. Finally, Faber Yayo is the intellectual of the group, who will casually make references to literature and Greek tragedies and is not shy about flaunting the French he picked up in college. I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention the “instrumental” voice of producer Bas Bron, whose beats are at the cutting edge of Dutch and indeed international hip-hop evolution.
