Acda en De Munnik is a Dutch cabaret-and-musical duo consisting of Thomas Acda and Paul de Munnik. Their Dutch pop songs are generally considered to be simple but effective, pulling in the attention of listeners immediately with their lyrics. Most of their songs are about happy things, mainly love, youth, and life, and their trademark are the harmonious vocals between the two artists. Along with pop group Van Dik Hout, they also form the band De Poema’s.

“The Two Captains” is a song by Acda en De Munnik, about a new relationship that does not work out and the subsequent separation. The ship is the relationship and the two captains are the man and the woman: “Dit huis is een schip en we zijn beiden kapitein” (This house is a ship and we are both captains). The situation is excellently described through metaphors, mostly dealing with sailing.

The song is sung by the man, who tells the story of his wife and the problems they are having together. According to the lyrics, the relationship will not hold for much longer, and in the end, they split up. “So I never know exactly where I stand, she picks me up and slams me back hard,” starts the song. The man doesn’t know what to do with it all. He doesn’t seem to understand his wife. “But when you’ve just left the harbor pleasantly, the anchor is thrown out again,” read the lyrics, using boating metaphors to describe the state of the relationship.

Nevertheless, although life and love can be hard, he is willing to work on it and improve things. “It’s a new ship and we both have to learn how to sail,” he says. But unfortunately, the chorus of the song deals with a breakup. “We are separating today, no matter what.” And they divide their belongings: “Your CD, my CD, our CD, but received from my mother, so it’s mine.” The last verse returns to sailing: “This ship is a house and we are together on the bridge. I love her and she loves me much. But just when you’re looking out over the sea, you see the harbor again.”
