LaBrassBanda is probably one of the strangest phenomena in the German music scene during the last few years. They are a Bavarian folk band who play traditional brass instruments and sing in a very strong Bavarian dialect (since it follows its own grammar and has its own vocabulary and phonetics, Bavarian is considered a stand-alone language by many linguists). Usually, German Volksmusik is appreciated mostly by the elderly or by traditionalists, but LaBrassBanda is quite popular among younger people and, despite the heavy dialect, even in the north of Germany. Theoretically, they could be considered a Bavarian folk music band, but due to their up-tempo beats, their ska and reggae elements, and their punk and rock influences, one cannot be so sure about what genre they fall into. When asked, they call their own music Bavarian Gypsy Brass, Funk Brass, or Alpen Jazz Techno.

One of their big hits is their song “Autobahn,” and although it might have the same title as the famous Kraftwerk hit from the 1970s, both songs are as different as different can get. What’s most peculiar about LaBrassBanda is that their vocals are almost incomprehensible to somebody who is not familiar with their dialect. When their first album was released, people demanded translations of the lyrics, so they could understand what the band were singing about. Singer and trumpeter Stefan Dettl, who actually studied trumpeting and briefly joined the Nuremberg Symphonic Orchestra, refuses to talk and sing in High German. Not because of an attitude, he claims, but because he can’t.

In “Autobahn,” a guy tells us about his crazy week. He is driving on the autobahn, thinking about his past. The previous week, he lost his job and, when he came home, he found his girlfriend having an affair with his neighbor. He felt he was not needed anymore and that he needed to go away. Heading on his car in the direction of Gardasee, he reminiscences about his past and realizes that he’s led a good life. But, even so, he's going to feel hurt for a while.

The dialect used in the lyrics is called Kheamgauerisch (Chiemgau dialect), and it’s spoken in the Chiemgau region in the German Alps. Several typical features can be found in this song. For instance, the use of diphthongs in such words as “ois” (alles/all), “oiso” (also/so), “vui” (viel/much), “desmoi” (dismal/this time), “aloa” (allein/alone), “wui”(will/want), and “Geid” (Geld/money). Also, word endings are omitted, as in “Woch” (Woche/week), “scho” (schon/already), and “hät” (hätte/had), while whole prefixes are similarly omitted, in words like “naus” (hinaus/out) and “nauf” (hinauf/up).

Instead of the conventional verb ending “–en,” this dialect employs “-t,” as in “ogfangt” (angefangen/start) and “braucht” (gebraucht/needed). Also, some words in the singular are used in the plural form, but their endings are bereaved of their vowel, such as in “Straßn” (Straße/street). And finally, this dialect has its own vocabulary, with words such as “nimmer” (nicht mehr/not anymore), “ned” (nicht/not), “i” (ich/I), and “an” (den/the).
