English for the Energy Industry is part of the OUP Express series dealing with more specific aspects of English in the professional, industrial, sports, and leisure fields, such as English for Meetings, English for Emails, English for Negotiating, and English for Customer Care, just to mention a few.

"English for the Energy Industry gives students the necessary linguistic skills to understand daily situations in the work environment, and complex developments within the global energy sector."

English for the Energy Industry is an ideal short course for anyone who needs English to communicate with colleagues and business contacts in the energy industry sector. This short, intensive course can be completed in 25-30 hours, so students who are at an intermediate level of English will make progress quickly. English for the Energy Industry can be used as a stand-alone course, for self-study using the interactive MultiROM, or alongside a course book such as International Express. This pack includes the Student's Book and MultiROM. The book consists of 6 units:

Unit 1: Introduction to the energy business: Fuels and energy sources, types of power plant, supplying the customer.

Unit 2: Markets and customers: Residential, business, and industrial customers, supplying an industrial customer, breakdown in supply.

Unit 3: Protecting the environment: Energy saving, the image of the energy industry, technical measures to reduce pollution, the cost of protecting the environment.

Unit 4: The nuclear issue: Developments in nuclear power, the nuclear production process, safety and security issues.

Unit 5: Investment plans: Mergers and takeover, SWOT analyses, financial documents.

Unit 6: The future of energy: Future production, demand, and supply, departments and their functions, the fuel cell.

The material is presented in a clear and organized manner while covering a broad range of input material and covering important information related to the energy industry. The listening extracts are realistic and present typical situations related to professional life. The role plays further emphasize and encourage the student to use the language used in such situations. The starter section at the beginning of each unit has warm-up and awareness-raising activities and the Output sections at the end of each unit encourage discussion and reflection. At the end of the book, students will find a wide range of extra material such as: the "Test Yourself" section, where students can review what they’ve worked on in each chapter, transcripts for the listening activities, an A-Z word list with space for translation and phonemic pronunciation, a list of useful phrases, vocabulary and abbreviations, an Acronyms and Numbers sheet, and an Answer Key.

English for the Energy Industry gives students the necessary linguistic skills to understand daily situations in the work environment, and complex developments within the global energy sector. Reading texts, diagrams, and authentic documents can help students learn key vocabulary and phrases in context. The role-plays also allow learners to practice language and skills in realistic situations. The presentation and page lay-out is clear and pleasant to the eye. It is an ideal course for students in this field who want to communicate better in English in their professional area.
