Most students at the age of 10 or so start to become more difficult to teach due to their lacking interest in learning; it can be even more challenging when they are learning a language like English! Fortunately, books like American English Primary Colors 4 exist to get these young students interested and learning with vibrant images, fun activities, and interesting subject matter all throughout the book.

Overview

First and foremost American English Primary Colors 4 follows the same format as the other AEPC books with its 6 units covering many subjects beyond English like animals, cuisine, school life and more. It’s also, unfortunately, around the same size as the other books in the series, which is a mere 64 pages which would mean the teacher would have to add some of their own material in the mix to beef up the lesson. Nevertheless what the book includes makes up for its size. Throughout the book there is a wide variety of content ranging from comparatives/superlatives to modals; the book also follows the story of 4 friends and their “adventure car” along with their super computer “Compo”. The story follows a comic book style so it’s great for class reading and role playing and the illustrations will easily capture young students’ interests. There are also lots of partner games, group activities and review games after every 2 units that are great practice for reviewing recently learned skills.

Pros:

•The workbook is perfect for homework activities and it is just as amusing as the main book.

•There are many fun craft making activities in this book that kids will enjoy like constructing menus for a restaurant, building your own story book, and more.

•Lots of interesting topics are covered including some sections about science.

Cons:

•Some songs may be more suitable for younger students and the often times, the student might find the music activities boring.

•The book is light and extra material is highly recommended.

Recommended For:

•Kids who have returned from living in a foreign country and need to brush up on English.

•Classrooms of at least 8 kids so there’s lots of interaction going on.

•Teachers who want to mix their own material with the book to create an even better lesson.

Overall, this book, like all other American English Primary Colors books, is a great choice for elementary school students who have a strong grasp of English and need to retain it. This book is excellent for teaching these easily bored children who need that English boost and an even bigger interest boost.
