Chicago is the 3rd largest city in the U.S., with an estimated population of 12 million in 2020. On the surface, Chicago might not strike you as a hub of French culture, but did you know the city’s story started with the arrival of French explorers in the 17th century? They named the area after “Checagou,” a translation of the Native American word for garlic, shikaakwa. And that’s not all — Chicago’s first permanent resident was Jean Baptiste Point du Sable. Today, French influence in the city is still visible in the cultural, social and business spheres. Learning this fascinating language, then, will allow you to enjoy themed festivals and events organized throughout the city, make new friends with similar interests, and even look for a new, international job. Contact us today to get started with French!
Learn French for Culture: If you are interested in French-themed cultural events, you can follow the website called French in Chicago, which lists events and publishes articles that can be of interest to the French-speaking community living in the city. Their site is written completely in French, so it’s a great opportunity to test the language skills you learn with us at Language Trainers! Bastille Day is also taken very seriously, with the Alliance Française of Chicago overseeing the event’s organization. And if you are a cinephile, you can attend the Annual Chicago French Film Festival. Established in 2010, this festival screens classic and contemporary films of French origin in their original language, so forget about English subtitles and enjoy the movie using your new language skills. As you can see, language classes in Chicago will open up many cultural opportunities for you to enjoy!
Learn French for Social and Food: If you are looking to make new friends who love the French language and culture, you can join the Chicago French Language Culture group. Practice your French with friendly people in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. After the meetings, you can take your new friends to sample some delicious French dishes. Chicago honors its French-language heritage and among its treasures is its cuisine. For example, you can find the Chicago French Market on Clinton Street, the only year-round, indoor market in the city. There are more than 30 vendors to choose from to get your fresh, organic ingredients to prepare traditional dishes as if you were in France! The Windy City is also filled with French restaurants which you can sample during the annual Passport to France event, hosted by the French-American Chamber of Commerce in Chicago. In 2017, it had over 1,000 Francophiles gather for tempting cuisine and live entertainment!
Learn French for Work: French courses in Chicago will also open professional doors to those who are looking for a new, international job. Many French companies, like Veolia, Dassault Systemes, Lafarge, Orange, JCDecaux, and AXA, have their U.S. headquarters located in Chicago, because Illinois’s financial market ranks as number 1 in the US. And if you would like to connect with French entrepreneurs, you can attend some of the events hosted by the French-American Chamber of Commerce in Chicago on North Michigan Avenue. Founded in 1978, this is an independent, non-profit organization whose mission is to foster a thriving economic relationship between the United States and France and to welcome and support French businesses and entrepreneurs in Chicago. Make the most out of these opportunities and impress the attendees with your French!
